Dr. Z's Skin Care News - The Total Picture - Winter 2003-2004

Winter Skin "Handle With Care"

Handle your skin with care this winter season. Dedicate some time to good skin care and prevent many of the cold winter ailments that affect our skin when the air gets colder and drier.

  • Take shorter showers or baths to keep the skin hydrated.

  • Don’t scrub your skin or scalp.

  • Apply emollients, such as the Skin Replenish Lotion while the skin is still damp. It is best to moisturize within 3 minutes of bathing to lock moisture into the skin.

  • Keep skin moisturized as much as possible to prevent dryness which enhances lines and wrinkles, by applying a facial moisturizer, such as the Maximum Facial Moisturizer.

  • Exercise, drink plenty of water and get plenty of sleep.

  • Pay extra attention to vulnerable areas such as the elbows, heels, hands and nails by applying the Body Revive Lotion to these areas.

  • Don’t forget the sunscreen!!

"C" Results & Get the "A"dvantage

Vitamins for the skin are getting the attention they deserve. The most popular topical vitamins are A and C. Vitamin A is an essential element to the skin because it normalizes and controls the growth and structures of the epidermis or upper layer of skin. Tests show that vitamin A made a significant improvement in the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles and reduced blotchy uneven skin tones. It also showed improvement in the hydration of skin, texture, tone and clarity. With regular use of Advantage “A” cream you will notice a dramatic difference in your skin.
Vitamin “C” is a strong anti-oxidant and free-radical scavenger with anti-inflammatory properties. Topical vitamin C such as the Vital “C” Serum (10%) or Super “C” Serum (25%) both have many anti-aging mechanisms. It helps in the stimulation of existing collagen and it offers photoprotection. Vitamin C can produce smoother, younger looking skin by diminishing fine lines and wrinkles. So, use Vitamin C in the AM and Vitamin A in the PM for best results!!

Brittle Nails

A common winter condition for some. Hard and brittle nails are common in the winter, due to low moisture and heated air. It is especially important to prevent this process from starting and to immediately care for it once it begins. It is important to wear gloves to protect your hands and nails from the elements. Be sure to avoid repeated contact with harsh substances, such as acetone, detergents and formaldehyde, found in some nail polish. It is also important to keep your finger nails shorter, to avoid any serious trauma to the nail and nail bed. Treatment includes applying a moisturizer containing urea, such as the Body Revive Lotion to the hands at least twice a day. In addition it is helpful to soak your hands in water before applying the moisturizer, and then wear white cotton gloves to bed.
